Our Rubus fruticosus Application @ Tough Kraut
Our thornless blackberry was planted on March 29, 2022, as part of the very first batch of fruit trees, nut trees, and berry shrubs we introduced to the Quinta. In fact, it was planted before we permanently moved onto the land. For several years, the plant survived rather than thrived. Located at the far eastern end of our food forest alongside other berry crops such as our goji berry, it received little attention beyond basic survival.
Then came 2026. Suddenly, the blackberry exploded with fruit production. It is now loaded with berries, and during harvest season I visit almost daily to pick at least a handful of ripe blackberries. One lesson is already clear: future Herman needs to build a proper trellis.
Step-by-Step Growing Guide
Growing blackberries is generally straightforward, but proper support, pruning, and harvesting techniques can dramatically improve production. The troubleshooting tips and FAQ below address many of the most common challenges growers face.
1. Choose the Right Site
Select a sunny location with good airflow. Blackberries produce the heaviest crops in full sun and benefit from protection against strong winds.
2. Prepare the Soil
Incorporate compost and organic matter before planting. Good drainage is essential, as blackberries dislike waterlogged roots.
3. Plant the Tree/Plant
Plant at the same depth as the nursery container. Space plants generously to allow airflow and future cane management.
