Welcome to the Tough Kraut Plant Library - a living archive of every plant and tree we’ve introduced to our land. Castanea sativa (Sweet Chestnut)

Sweet chestnut is a large, long-lived nut tree valued for its edible chestnuts, wildlife benefits, timber, and broad summer canopy. Growing sweet chestnut in Zone 8a can work well, but our hot, dry Mediterranean summers make establishment the real challenge—especially for young seedlings trying to survive full sun, wind, and inconsistent moisture.

Cercis siliquastrum (Judas Tree)

Cercis siliquastrum, commonly known as the Judas Tree, is a small Mediterranean tree famous for the pink to magenta flowers that can emerge directly from older branches and even the trunk. Growing Judas Tree in Zone 8a suits our Central Portugal climate well in principle, although young trees may still need patience, moisture, and protection while establishing through hot, dry summers.

Our Pingo de Mel was already rooted into this land long before Tough Kraut existed. Growing Honey Drop Fig in Zone 8a is almost tailor-made for our Mediterranean conditions: Ficus carica loves summer heat, becomes impressively drought-resilient once established, and produces sweet fruit for fresh eating, drying, preserves—and whatever the birds and ants manage to claim first.

Portulaca oleracea (Purslane)

Portulaca oleracea, better known as Purslane, is a low-growing succulent annual with fleshy leaves, reddish stems, and small yellow flowers. Growing Purslane in Zone 8a is hardly difficult—it already grows wild across Mediterranean regions and has made itself particularly comfortable in the regularly irrigated beds of our greenhouse.

Chenopodium album (Fat-hen)

Fat-hen (Chenopodium album) is a fast-growing edible annual that commonly appears in cultivated and disturbed ground. Growing Chenopodium album in Zone 8a requires almost no effort on our Quinta—it volunteers wherever conditions suit it, especially around annual garden beds where soil is regularly disturbed.

Tribulus terrestris (Puncturevine)

Puncturevine is a low-growing, heat-tolerant annual best known for its hard fruits armed with painfully sharp spines. Growing Puncturevine in Zone 8a requires no help from us: Tribulus terrestris readily occupies dry, sunny and disturbed ground, but its ability to hide below mower height makes it one of the least desirable wild plants on our Mediterranean homestead.

Rubus idaeus (Raspberry)

Our working identification is Rubus idaeus, although the original cultivar is unknown and we currently have no photographs from its early years. Growing raspberry in Zone 8a can be surprisingly successful, but our experience shows that a vigorous patch may still need additional water and protection from extreme Mediterranean heat to produce good-quality fruit.

Convolvulus arvensis (Field Bindweed)

Convolvulus arvensis, commonly called Field Bindweed, is a low-growing or climbing perennial recognized by its arrow-shaped leaves and white to pale pink trumpet flowers. Although growing Field Bindweed in Zone 8a is rarely intentional, the plant is well adapted to Mediterranean conditions and can reveal useful patterns involving disturbance, vegetation cover, competition, and soil moisture.

Gynura aurantiaca (Purple Passion Plant)

With leaves that appear to have been dusted in purple velvet, Gynura aurantiaca is grown mainly for its unusually colourful foliage and relaxed, trailing habit. Growing Purple Passion Plant in Zone 8a is best approached as a container project: give it bright filtered light, shelter it from Portugal’s strongest afternoon sun, and move it somewhere frost-free before winter.

Mentha suaveolens (Apple Mint)

This wild-growing mint occurs naturally in one of the moister parts of our Quinta. Growing Apple Mint in Zone 8a is usually straightforward wherever its roots can reach reliable moisture, and its summer flower spikes attract an impressive mixture of bees, hoverflies, wasps, butterflies, and other visiting insects.

Rhododendron hybrid (Japanese Evergreen Azalea)

Japanese evergreen azaleas are compact ornamental shrubs valued for their glossy foliage and colourful spring flowers. Growing Japanese Evergreen Azalea in Zone 8a is possible in containers, but Mediterranean heat, strong afternoon sun and alkaline water can make summer care more demanding than winter protection.

Aloe arborescens (Candelabra Aloe)

Aloe arborescens is a branching, clump-forming aloe that can eventually develop multiple woody stems crowned with blue-green leaf rosettes and striking red-orange winter flowers. Growing Candelabra Aloe in Zone 8a is possible as a carefully managed Mediterranean-climate experiment, but good drainage, shelter from frost, and protection from prolonged winter rain are essential.

Dandelion is often treated as a weed, but on a self-sufficient homestead it can be read as a messenger, soil worker, edible green, pollinator plant, and childhood memory all rolled into one bright yellow button.

Epiphyllum oxypetalum is a tropical, epiphytic cactus famous for its large, white, fragrant flowers that open at night and often fade by morning. Growing Queen of the Night in Zone 8a is best approached as a container or greenhouse project, especially in Mediterranean climates where hot dry summers and cold winter nights can both cause trouble if the plant is treated like a desert cactus.

Growing Dotted Loosestrife in Zone 8a is generally straightforward when its roots are protected from prolonged summer drought, making it particularly useful around ponds, rain gardens, damp borders, and contained miniature wetlands.

White Oleander is the white-flowering form of Nerium oleander, a tough evergreen shrub known for thriving in hot, dry, Mediterranean-style conditions. Growing White Oleander in Zone 8a can be a smart choice for dry pathways, sunny edges, and low-input ornamental structure, as long as one golden rule is respected: this plant is beautiful, resilient, and seriously toxic.

Nerium oleander (Red Oleander)

Red Oleander is a drought-tough Mediterranean-style shrub with bold flowers, narrow evergreen leaves, and an impressive ability to grow where many softer plants would file a formal complaint. Growing Red Oleander in Zone 8a makes sense for hot, dry, rocky slopes and exposed edges, but it comes with one serious rule: every part of the plant is toxic, so beauty and caution must grow together.

Taro is a tropical food crop grown for its starchy corms, lush leaves, and rich cultural food traditions across Asia, the Pacific, Africa, and the Caribbean. Growing taro in Zone 8a is possible, but only with protection: outdoors it behaves like a summer tropical, while greenhouse or indoor culture gives it a much better chance of returning after winter.

Psidium cattleyanum (Strawberry Guava)

Strawberry Guava is a subtropical fruiting shrub known for glossy evergreen leaves, white flowers, and sweet-tart red or yellow fruit with a strawberry-like aroma. Growing Strawberry Guava in Zone 8a is a true edge-case experiment: the plant prefers warmer USDA Zones 9a–11, yet our small tree has survived repeated winter dieback on our Central Portugal homestead.

For gardeners interested in growing Aloe vera in Zone 8a, container cultivation offers the flexibility needed to enjoy this useful plant while protecting it from occasional winter frosts.

Phytolacca americana (Pokeweed)

Pokeweed is a bold, fast-growing wild perennial with thick stems, large leaves, long flower clusters, and dark purple-black berries that birds seem to appreciate far more safely than humans do. Growing Pokeweed in Zone 8a is not something we recommend intentionally in Portugal, because Phytolacca americana is invasive here, but when it arrives on its own, it becomes an important lesson in observation, wildlife value, toxicity, and responsible land management.
