Peruvian Apple Cactus Propagation: How We Took and Planted Four Cuttings

One cactus can become many, if you give it time, dry wounds, and enough patience not to poke it every second day.


Our Peruvian Apple Cactus, listed in our Plant Library as Cereus repandus and often sold by nurseries as Cereus peruvianus, started as a small nursery plant. We bought it on 10 November 2022, when it was only about 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16 in) tall. It spent its first winter in the original pot before I planted it the following spring at the corner of a garden bed beside an olive tree.


Since then, it has become one of the most striking plants on our Quinta in Central Portugal. The mother plant now stands about 1.80 m (5 ft 11 in) tall, has several upright stems, and produced its first flower in early June 2026. That flower deserves its own article, but it also marked a practical moment for me. This cactus had become mature enough to propagate.

On 6 June 2026, I took four terminal stem cuttings from the mother plant. On 8 July 2026, after 32 days of callusing in the shade beside one of our shipping containers, I planted all four directly into the ground in different parts of the Quinta.


This article is not a victory lap. These cuttings have not rooted yet. It is a real Peruvian Apple Cactus propagation experiment, showing what we did, why we did it, and what we still need to observe.

Why We Are Propagating Our Peruvian Apple Cactus


We are not propagating this cactus simply because we want more spiky green towers, although that is part of the charm. We are doing it because Cereus repandus may become a useful structural plant in our dry, sunny Mediterranean garden.


A mature Peruvian Apple Cactus gives strong vertical shape, handles dry conditions once established, and creates a distinct visual marker in the landscape. Fresh cuttings, however, are not drought-proof. They have no roots yet, so the first goal is not fast growth. The first goal is staying firm and rot-free long enough to root.


There is also a resilience reason. One mother plant is a single point of failure. If frost, rot, or accidental damage takes it out, the whole line is gone. By planting four new cuttings in different parts of the property, we spread that risk and learn which microclimates suit this species best.


The nursery idea sits in the background too. If this cactus roots well and proves reliable, it could one day become part of a future Tough Kraut nursery. Fresh stem cuttings or rooted young plants may be possible, but we are not there yet. First, the plant has to prove itself.


Tough Tip: Do not propagate only because you can. Propagate plants that earn their place by adding food, beauty, structure, resilience, or useful lessons.


What Our Older Potted Cutting Already Taught Us


Before taking these four new cuttings, we already had one earlier Peruvian Apple Cactus cutting growing in a pot inside the greenhouse. I should have planted it out much earlier. Instead, it stayed in the pot for around one and a half years while other Quinta jobs kept jumping the queue.


That sounds like neglect, but the cactus had its own quiet plan. It survived, rooted, and produced a new stem or shoot that is now much taller than the original cutting. I do not know exactly how long rooting took because I was not monitoring it from the start. So I will not pretend to have a neat rooting timeline.


What I can say is this: under our conditions, a stem cutting of this cactus can establish and produce strong new growth. That gave me more confidence to take the next step and plant four new cuttings directly in the ground.


This old potted cutting also reminds me that pots and open ground are not the same test. A pot in the greenhouse gives more control. Direct planting exposes the cuttings to real soil, real heat, real drainage, and real mistakes. The cactus may be patient, but it is not magic.


How We Took and Callused the Cuttings


On 6 June 2026, I cut four terminal sections from the mother plant using a sharp machete. The cuttings varied a lot in size, from about 10 cm to 1 m (4 in to 3 ft 3 in) long. Their diameter was roughly 10 to 14 cm (4 to 5.5 in).

I chose terminal sections only. That made the planting direction obvious, with a clear top and bottom. Middle sections can also root, but they are easier to mix up if you do not mark them well. Planting a cactus upside down is one of those mistakes that sounds silly until you are holding a green cylinder and asking yourself which end was which.


The cuttings were placed in the shade beside one of our shipping containers to callus. I originally expected a shorter callusing period. In reality, life on the Quinta got busy, and they stayed there for 32 days. Even without the delay, I would probably have waited at least 10 to 15 days because these were thick cuttings with large cut surfaces.

That long callusing period was not a grand strategy. It was simply real life. What mattered was the condition of the cut surface. By planting day, the bases were dry, hard, and sealed. That is the key lesson. A cactus cutting should not be planted just because a certain number of days has passed. It should be planted when the wound has properly dried.


Tough Tip: The calendar is only a guide. The callus is the judge. If the cut surface still looks fresh, damp, soft, or exposed, wait longer.


Where We Planted the Four Cuttings


On 8 July 2026, I planted all four cuttings directly into native soil. Each cutting was planted with the callused base down, about 10 cm (4 in) deep. I did not use supports, stakes, or ties. For now, the cuttings are standing on their own.


The first cutting went opposite the place where the cuttings had been lying to callus, near one of our shipping containers. This site is easy to observe because we pass it often. That makes it a useful monitoring location. If something changes, I should notice quickly.


The second cutting went behind our solar panels, near the fence line, but with enough space left so sheep can still reach the fence area. At least, that is the plan. Sheep have a special talent for testing human optimism. This site may have extra reflected heat and a slightly different microclimate, so it will be interesting to watch.

The third cutting went downhill from the mother plant, between our mobile home and the granite stone house. This is the most challenging site because the soil is very shallow. Solid granite bedrock sits around 20 cm (8 in) below the surface. I want to see whether Cereus repandus can establish where root depth is naturally limited.


The fourth cutting went at the entrance area to our food forest. If it establishes well, it could become a living landmark that marks the transition into that part of the Quinta. It is the most visual planting choice, but beauty does not guarantee success. Sun, drainage, frost, and time will decide.


Tough Tip: When testing several cuttings, do not place them all in the same perfect-looking spot. Different locations teach different lessons.


Watering, Monitoring, and What Success Looks Like


After planting, I watered each cutting with one watering can. This is what I did, not a universal rule. Many cactus growers avoid watering new cuttings straight away, especially in pots. In our case, the soil was extremely dry, the weather was hot, and daytime temperatures were well above 30°C (86°F). I wanted the soil to settle around the callused bases.


That choice still carries risk. A rootless cactus cutting cannot use water like an established plant. If the base stays wet, rot can start before roots form. So from here on, the main job is observation, not pampering.


In the first weeks, I will watch for firm stems, upright growth, and no dark, soft tissue near the soil line. Slight shrivelling may happen while the cutting uses stored moisture. That alone does not mean failure. Spreading softness, bad smell, collapsing tissue, or dark rot at the base would be much more serious.


I will not pull the cuttings out to check for roots. New roots are fragile, and disturbing them is a good way to turn curiosity into damage. Instead, I will monitor after one week, one month, three months, the end of summer, after the first winter, and after one year.


Short-term success means no rot and no collapse. Medium-term success means the cuttings remain firm and become more stable. Long-term success means they survive summer heat, winter wet, and begin producing new growth.

Tough Tip: Do not celebrate too early, but do not ignore small wins. A firm, upright cactus cutting after a hot first month is not a proven plant yet, but it is a good start.


Could This Become a Tough Kraut Nursery Plant?


Maybe.


The mother plant is now large enough to provide occasional propagation material. The older potted cutting shows that this cactus can establish from stem sections under our conditions. These four new direct-planted cuttings will give us much better information.


If the species proves reliable, it could be a good fit for a future Tough Kraut nursery. Possible options might include rooted potted plants, young established specimens, or fresh cuttings sold by size. Fresh cuttings could reduce the need to keep large numbers of potted plants in stock, but they also transfer part of the rooting risk to the buyer.


That would require clear instructions, honest sizing, careful packing, and realistic expectations. We are not ready to offer that yet. First, we need to see how these four cuttings perform over time.


This is the slow but solid path: observe first, sell later, and never let enthusiasm outrun proof.


Peruvian Apple Cactus Propagation: Four Planted Possibilities


This project started with one small nursery cactus in November 2022. Since then, it has become a tall mother plant, produced its first flower, given us one successful older potted cutting, and now supplied four new propagation candidates for the Quinta.

That is what I love about propagation. You are not only making more plants. You are multiplying experience.


One cutting now tests an easy-to-watch upper-land site. One sits behind the solar panels. One faces shallow granite soil. One may become a landmark at the food forest entrance.


For now, these are not four new cactus plants. They are four carefully placed possibilities. The real results will come after a Portuguese summer, a wet winter, and enough time for the cuttings to show us whether our plan worked.

Q: How long should a Peruvian Apple Cactus cutting callus?

A: There is no universal number. Small cuttings may seal faster than thick sections. Humidity, airflow, shade, and temperature all matter. Our cuttings callused for 32 days because I was busy with other Quinta work, but I would likely have waited at least 10 to 15 days anyway. The base should be dry, hard, and sealed before planting.


Q: Why is my cactus cutting rotting at the base?

A: Common causes include planting before the cut surface has callused, poor drainage, too much water, damaged tissue, dirty tools, or cool wet conditions. If the base turns soft, dark, and smelly, rot may be spreading. Healthy tissue may need to be cut above the rot and callused again, but only if enough firm stem remains.


Q: Can Peruvian Apple Cactus cuttings be planted directly in the ground?

A: Yes, they can be planted directly in suitable conditions, but success depends on warmth, drainage, rainfall, soil, and protection from disturbance. Pots give more control. Direct planting avoids later transplanting. We chose direct planting because we wanted to test real locations on our land.
