Prunus domestica 'Stanley' is a classic European prune plum producing elongated, dark blue-purple fruits with firm yellow-green flesh that can be eaten fresh, cooked, preserved, or dried. Growing Stanley plum in Zone 8a suits our Mediterranean climate surprisingly well, although our own tree has shown how difficult alternating winter waterlogging and severe summer dryness can be for a young fruit tree.


Perhaps the biggest lesson from our tree is that fruit production and healthy establishment are not the same thing. Despite barely increasing in size since planting, our young 'Stanley' managed to load itself with roughly 40–50 plums—a reminder that sometimes the gardener has to say, "Thanks, but that's enough plums for now."

Our Prunus domestica 'Stanley' Application @ Tough Kraut


Our Prunus domestica 'Stanley' is one of the OG fruit trees of the Tough Kraut food forest. We planted it during our first year on the Quinta in 2022, close to the eastern fence line, and over the years that corner has proven to be one of the tougher places to establish a tree.


The contradiction is impressive. During wet winters, a nearby low spot can become heavily saturated and hold standing water after prolonged rain. Fast-forward to summer and the same corner feels like one of the driest areas of the property. A little higher on the terrace stands a mature Ash tree that predates us, while our greenhouse now occupies part of the terrace as well. Between seasonal extremes and established root competition, our 'Stanley' has hardly increased in size.


It also produces numerous shoots from below the graft. These are rootstock suckers rather than 'Stanley' growth, so this tree rewards an occasional inspection and a quick cleanup at its base.


Then came 2026. Despite its modest size, the tree produced roughly 40–50 plums.

That sounds like success—and in one sense it certainly is—but it also exposed one of our management mistakes. With hindsight, we should have removed most, perhaps all, of that early fruit and allowed this slow-growing tree to invest more energy into roots, shoots, trunk diameter, and permanent branches.


Next season, fruit thinning will happen considerably earlier.


Step-by-Step Growing Guide


Young 'Stanley' plums can begin cropping surprisingly early, which creates one of the most useful troubleshooting lessons for home orchardists: fruiting does not automatically mean the tree is ready for a full crop. The FAQ and Field Notes below dig deeper into slow growth, rootstock suckers, drainage, drought stress, and deciding when to sacrifice fruit for future tree development.


1. Choose the Right Site


Give 'Stanley' full sun and preferably a sheltered position with good air circulation. Avoid depressions that remain saturated after winter rain; although plum trees appreciate moisture, prolonged standing water deprives roots of oxygen and can seriously restrict establishment.


Our eastern food-forest corner illustrates the problem perfectly: winter can be too wet while summer becomes exceptionally dry.


2. Prepare the Soil


Aim for fertile soil that holds useful moisture without remaining waterlogged. Incorporate mature compost around the wider root zone rather than creating an overly rich planting pocket, and use organic mulch to moderate both winter soil exposure and summer evaporation.


Where drainage is questionable, planting slightly proud of surrounding grade or on a broad mound can provide extra insurance.


3. Plant the Tree


Plant during dormancy and keep the graft union clearly above soil level. Do not bury the trunk flare or graft, since doing so can encourage unwanted rooting and complicate future sucker management.


Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around—not against—the trunk.


4. Water Consistently


Young plum trees need enough water to build an extensive root system even though established European plums can become reasonably resilient.


In Mediterranean Zone 8a conditions, occasional deep irrigation is generally preferable to frequent shallow watering. A tree suffering through a dry summer after spending winter in saturated soil receives the worst of both worlds, so improving soil structure and stabilizing moisture should take priority over simply adding more fertilizer.


5. Ensure Proper Pollination


'Stanley' is self-fertile, so a single tree can produce fruit. However, compatible European plum cultivars flowering nearby can increase fruit set. Our experience certainly confirms that lack of fruit set is not this tree's current problem.


6. Prune Annually


European plums generally need relatively light structural pruning while young. Establish a strong framework, remove damaged or badly positioned branches, and avoid repeatedly cutting away the young wood the tree needs to expand.


More importantly for grafted trees, remove every shoot arising below the graft union as soon as practical. Rootstock suckers compete directly with the grafted 'Stanley' canopy and can become surprisingly vigorous if ignored.


7. Manage Pests and Diseases


Inspect foliage and young shoots for aphids and watch ripening fruit for brown rot, particularly where fruits touch each other.


Good airflow, sanitation, careful fruit thinning, removing fallen fruit, and avoiding long periods of wet foliage reduce disease pressure without turning the orchard into a chemistry experiment.


8. Harvest and Store


'Stanley' normally ripens in late summer into early autumn, with September being a classic harvest period in cooler climates. Look for deep blue-purple skin with its natural waxy bloom and fruit that begins to soften slightly while retaining the characteristically firm flesh.


The freestone fruits are especially useful for fresh eating, baking, preserves, and drying into prunes.


9. Note: Should You Remove Fruit From a Young Plum Tree?


This is one lesson we wish we had applied more aggressively to our own tree. During the first growing season after planting, removing flowers or newly set fruit allows a young plum to direct resources into its roots and structural growth. In subsequent years, don't judge readiness purely by the calendar—judge the vigor of the tree.


A strong young tree making substantial new shoots and building sturdy branches can gradually carry more fruit. A tree that remains small, has weak annual growth, or is coping with drought, poor drainage, root competition, transplant stress, or repeated sucker growth should carry considerably less.


When thinning plums, act early—ideally within around 30 days after flowering—and generally leave around 15–20 cm (6–8 in) between developing fruits on a branch.

With our slow-growing 'Stanley', 40–50 fruits were more than we should have allowed. Next season we'll make the call much earlier and prioritize the tree before the harvest.


Kraut Crew Insight


Our 'Stanley' has given us one of those wonderfully backwards homestead lessons: sometimes fewer plums are the better harvest.


Forty or fifty fruits hanging from a tree that has barely grown looks impressive until you realize that the little thing is spending its savings before it has finished building the house. Next spring we'll be less sentimental with the tiny plums, more ruthless with the rootstock suckers, and considerably more interested in new shoots than bragging rights.

Herman’s Tough Kraut Field Notes: Solving Stanley Plum Cultivation Challenges


Growing Prunus domestica 'Stanley' has given us an excellent example of why troubleshooting a fruit tree requires looking beyond whether it flowers or produces fruit. Our tree can apparently make dozens of plums while simultaneously making very little tree.


That contradiction raises several useful FAQ questions. Is slow growth caused by drought, waterlogging, competition, excessive fruiting, or rootstock suckers? In our case, there may not be one single culprit. The site changes from excessively wet in winter to exceptionally dry in summer, established trees compete nearby, and the tree has been spending resources on both rootstock shoots and a surprisingly large fruit crop.


Q: My young 'Stanley' is fruiting heavily but barely growing. Should I remove the fruit?

A: Yes, heavy thinning is sensible when vegetative growth and establishment are weak. During the planting year, remove the crop entirely. In later years, evaluate vigor rather than age alone. For a healthy established plum, spacing young fruit about 15–20 cm (6–8 in) apart is a useful target. For a struggling young tree, go considerably further and retain only a token crop—or none at all. The key is timing. Removing small fruit shortly after bloom saves far more tree energy than removing nearly mature plums in August.


Q: What are all the shoots appearing underneath the graft?

A: They are most likely rootstock suckers. Because cultivated 'Stanley' trees are normally grafted, anything originating below the graft union belongs to the rootstock rather than the fruiting cultivar. Cut or rub them off close to their point of origin whenever you notice them. Don't let them become established branches because they compete for water, nutrients, and carbohydrates and can eventually dominate the grafted tree.


Q: Can a plum tolerate winter waterlogging followed by extreme summer dryness?

A: Neither extreme is ideal. Plums generally prefer soil that retains moisture while still draining freely. Standing winter water reduces oxygen around roots, while severe summer drought can stop shoot extension and reduce the tree's ability to build the framework it needs. Where both problems occur in the same location, concentrate on drainage, broad organic mulching, soil structure, and occasional deep summer irrigation rather than alternating between swamp and dust.


Q: Should we remove all 40–50 plums now?

A: If the crop is already close to maturity, removing everything now offers much less benefit than thinning shortly after fruit set because the tree has already invested most of the season's resources. At this stage, remove damaged fruit, relieve any dangerously overloaded branches, harvest promptly as fruits ripen, and use the experience to change next year's management. The real intervention belongs in spring.
