Alnus glutinosa (Common Alder)

Alnus glutinosa is a fast-growing European alder associated naturally with riverbanks, streams, and other moist ground. Growing Common Alder in Zone 8a can work surprisingly well, but in a Mediterranean climate its love of moisture matters far more than its ability to tolerate winter cold. Aria edulis, better known as common whitebeam, is a European deciduous tree recognizable by its pale, felted leaf undersides, white spring flowers, and red autumn fruits. Growing Aria edulis in Zone 8a is proving interesting at Tough Kraut: frost has caused little concern so far, while our hot, dry Mediterranean summer appears to be the much tougher test.

Portugal may be famous for cork oaks, olive groves, and umbrella-shaped pine trees, but its native woodland is far more varied than the postcard view suggests. Travel from the wetter north to the hot interior, then follow a river valley or climb into the mountains, and the trees change with the land. Some thrive through long summer droughts. Others need deep, cool soil or almost permanent access to water.

Our grapefruit arrived with an EU plant passport identifying it simply as Citrus paradisi, without a cultivar name. Growing Citrus paradisi in Zone 8a is a slightly ambitious Mediterranean experiment because grapefruit loves heat but is only moderately frost tolerant. After several years of modest growth in our citrus grove, our tree is finally carrying its first fruit in 2026, which feels like a small but very welcome vote of confidence from the tree itself.

Prunus domestica 'Stanley' is a classic European prune plum producing elongated, dark blue-purple fruits with firm yellow-green flesh that can be eaten fresh, cooked, preserved, or dried. Growing Stanley plum in Zone 8a suits our Mediterranean climate surprisingly well, although our own tree has shown how difficult alternating winter waterlogging and severe summer dryness can be for a young fruit tree.

Honey Drop Fig, Ficus carica ‘Pingo de Mel’, is a Portuguese fig cultivar well suited to warm Mediterranean conditions. Known locally as Pingo de Mel, it produces greenish-yellow figs and is traditionally grown in Portugal, including around Torres Novas.

Pyracantha angustifolia (Orange Firethorn)

Growing Orange Firethorn in Zone 8a has turned out to be an excellent low-input experiment in our Mediterranean food forest. Pyracantha angustifolia combines evergreen structure, spring flowers, bright orange autumn and winter fruits, wildlife value, and impressive drought resilience—but those sharp spines make sure you never forget which shrub you are dealing with. Botanically, the orange “berries” are actually small pomes, relatives of miniature apples.

Our unidentified Rosa hybrid is a vigorous Garden Rose with densely double flowers opening in rich pink and magenta tones, with ageing petals retaining deeper magenta and purplish shades. Growing Rosa hybrid roses in Zone 8a suits our Mediterranean homestead surprisingly well: this neighbor-propagated rose handles summer heat, produces strong upright canes, and continues forming new flower buds after its main spring flowering period.

Castanea sativa (Sweet Chestnut)

Sweet chestnut is a large, long-lived nut tree valued for its edible chestnuts, wildlife benefits, timber, and broad summer canopy. Growing sweet chestnut in Zone 8a can work well, but our hot, dry Mediterranean summers make establishment the real challenge—especially for young seedlings trying to survive full sun, wind, and inconsistent moisture.

Cercis siliquastrum, commonly known as the Judas Tree, is a small Mediterranean tree famous for the pink to magenta flowers that can emerge directly from older branches and even the trunk. Growing Judas Tree in Zone 8a suits our Central Portugal climate well in principle, although young trees may still need patience, moisture, and protection while establishing through hot, dry summers.

Wild Neighbors: Moorish Gecko (Tarentola mauritanica) On Our Portuguese Homestead

Some wild neighbors make dramatic entrances. Others simply appear on a wall one evening, disappear into a crack, and leave us wondering whether we actually saw them. The Moorish gecko belongs firmly in the second category. We have spotted these chunky little reptiles several times over the years, originally around our old granite stone house ruin and now increasingly around the shipping containers we use for storage.

Our Pingo de Mel was already rooted into this land long before Tough Kraut existed. Growing Honey Drop Fig in Zone 8a is almost tailor-made for our Mediterranean conditions: Ficus carica loves summer heat, becomes impressively drought-resilient once established, and produces sweet fruit for fresh eating, drying, preserves—and whatever the birds and ants manage to claim first.

Portulaca oleracea, better known as Purslane, is a low-growing succulent annual with fleshy leaves, reddish stems, and small yellow flowers. Growing Purslane in Zone 8a is hardly difficult—it already grows wild across Mediterranean regions and has made itself particularly comfortable in the regularly irrigated beds of our greenhouse.

Fat-hen (Chenopodium album) is a fast-growing edible annual that commonly appears in cultivated and disturbed ground. Growing Chenopodium album in Zone 8a requires almost no effort on our Quinta—it volunteers wherever conditions suit it, especially around annual garden beds where soil is regularly disturbed.
