Alnus glutinosa is a fast-growing European alder associated naturally with riverbanks, streams, and other moist ground. Growing Common Alder in Zone 8a can work surprisingly well, but in a Mediterranean climate its love of moisture matters far more than its ability to tolerate winter cold. Its partnership with nitrogen-fixing Frankia bacteria also makes alder particularly interesting for food forests and regenerative planting.


Portuguese alders historically identified as Alnus glutinosa are sometimes separated as Alnus lusitanica. Portuguese botanical databases currently reflect both treatments, so the exact taxonomic boundary remains worth keeping in mind for wild-collected trees.

Our Alnus glutinosa Application @ Tough Kraut


We are not completely sure where our Alder originated, but our best guess is that we collected the small rooted sapling during one of our road trips through Central Portugal, possibly around the Serra do Buçaco region. We first potted it up and later planted it in our food forest, probably in autumn about two years ago.


Since then, it has been one of our more impressive young trees. At roughly 2.2 m (7.2 ft) tall, it has developed both height and trunk diameter much faster than many neighboring trees. Its nitrogen-fixing ability makes that growth even more interesting to us, and propagation is definitely next on the experiment list.


Step-by-Step Growing Guide


1. Choose the Right Site


Give Alder sun and, more importantly in Mediterranean climates, access to reliable soil moisture. A naturally damp food-forest position is much better than a dry exposed slope.


2. Prepare the Soil


Little improvement is usually needed if the soil already holds moisture. Alder is unusually comfortable in heavier and periodically wet ground.


3. Plant the Tree


Plant in autumn or winter while temperatures are mild, keeping the root collar level with the surrounding soil.


4. Water Consistently


Young trees need reliable water through Mediterranean summers. Alder is tough, but drought tolerance is not its superpower.


5. Ensure Proper Pollination


No partner tree is required for survival. Alder carries male and female flowers on the same tree and relies mainly on wind.


6. Prune Annually


Only remove damaged, crossing, or badly positioned branches unless you deliberately want to coppice the tree for biomass.


7. Manage Pests and Diseases


Healthy trees are generally trouble-free. Avoid creating unnecessary stress through severe drought, particularly while young.


8. Harvest and Store


There is no conventional food harvest. Instead, think biomass, leaf litter, seed for propagation, shade, habitat, and improved ecological function.


9. Note


For Mediterranean growers, troubleshooting Alder usually starts with one question: does the root zone stay moist enough through summer?

Our Alder is quickly earning a place on the propagation list. A tree that grows this fast while supporting soil fertility deserves a closer look, although Mediterranean summers will probably be the real test of how useful it becomes on our Quinta.

Herman’s Tough Kraut Field Notes: Solving Common Alder Cultivation Challenges


Our Alder has given us relatively little troubleshooting so far. The bigger FAQ for our conditions is whether a moisture-loving northern tree can keep performing through increasingly dry Portuguese summers.


Q: Does Alder really fix nitrogen?

A: Yes. Alder develops root nodules containing nitrogen-fixing Frankia bacteria, allowing atmospheric nitrogen to enter the plant-soil system. It is therefore a genuine actinorhizal nitrogen fixer rather than a legume.


Q: Can Common Alder grow in Mediterranean Zone 8a?

A: Yes, but summer moisture is the limiting factor. Give it a cooler food-forest location, deep soil, mulch, or access to naturally moist ground.


Q: Why is my Alder growing so quickly?

A: Fast juvenile growth is normal when moisture and rooting conditions are favorable. Nitrogen fixation can also help Alder establish on comparatively nutrient-poor ground.


Q: What is the easiest way to propagate it?

A: Seed is the obvious method once mature cones are available. Hardwood cuttings are another recognized option and one we want to experiment with ourselves.


Q: Should I coppice an Alder in a food forest?

A: You can. Coppicing can keep a potentially large tree manageable while providing repeated woody biomass, but we plan to let ours develop further before deciding how heavily to manage it.
