Our Fraxinus angustifolia Application @ Tough Kraut
This Fraxinus angustifolia was already standing when we arrived. It is large and tall, parked at the end of the second terrace where the greenhouse now sits, and it does a quiet, essential job: it throws morning shade across the greenhouse glass when the Portuguese summer sun starts punching early. We did not plant it, name it, or train it. We just noticed that when the ash drops its leaves the year is turning, and when it flushes new foliage in spring the whole terrace looks like it has been plugged back in.
So far we have not tried to propagate this tree. That is starting to look like a missed opportunity. A fast-growing native deciduous tree that already works as shade structure, seasonal instrument, and ecological anchor deserves copies—on wetter lines, lower terraces, and any spot that needs a tough canopy without another imported experiment.
Step-by-Step Growing Guide
1. Choose the Right Site
Full sun and a deep, moist root run—drainage line, terrace toe, or cool depression. Keep new canopies away from the greenhouse, pipes, and foundations.
2. Prepare the Soil
Loosen a wide planting area and mix in compost. Ash wants moist soil with air, not compacted clay that stays soggy after rain.
3. Plant the Tree
Plant in autumn or early spring with the root collar at soil level. Water in deeply and mulch in a wide ring that does not touch the bark.
4. Water Consistently
Give young trees deep water through the first two or three dry summers. A mature terrace ash can look independent; a first-year seedling cannot.
5. Ensure Proper Pollination
No second tree is required for the canopy to thrive. Flowers are wind-pollinated and appear before the leaves; collect samaras from more than one freixo if you want genetic diversity.
6. Prune Annually
In late winter, remove dead, crossing, or hazardous wood. Pollarding is traditional for fodder, but it will change the morning shade over the greenhouse.

Growing Fraxinus angustifolia in Zone 8a looks easy when the tree is already 15 m (49 ft) tall and throwing morning shade on a greenhouse. The troubleshooting starts the day you decide to multiply it. Most FAQ questions we get—and the ones we are now asking ourselves—are about water, seed dormancy, disease headlines from northern Europe, and where the next tree should actually stand.
This species is a riparian tree at heart. It will grow on a terrace, in a depression, or along a cool slope, but it is reading soil moisture more carefully than your rainfall app. Treat the following as a working FAQ from one large freixo and a lot of Mediterranean common sense.
Q: Can I grow new Fraxinus angustifolia trees from the samaras hanging on our terrace ash?
A: Yes—and seed is the method most likely to work. Collect ripe, brown-yellow winged fruits in autumn. Sow some immediately in an outdoor bed or deep pots (fresh seed often germinates the following spring). Store the rest dry and give them a cold, moist stratification of roughly 4–8 weeks, sometimes longer, before a spring sowing. Pot seedlings for one or two seasons before they go to a permanent hole.
Q: Will hardwood cuttings clone this exact tree?
A: Maybe, but do not bet the food forest on it. Forest-nursery practice is blunt: Fraxinus angustifolia cuttings do not root easily, which is why seed and grafting dominate. Do not add irrigation leaks against the foundation, do not plant greedy competitors in the same root zone, and site any new ashes farther from glass, pipes, and walls. Morning shade on the greenhouse is a gift; a root in a water line is not.
Q: How close can I plant the next one, and will it survive our dry summers?
A: Give a future canopy 6–10 m (20–33 ft) of elbow room, more if you want understory crops. Summer survival depends less on hero watering and more on soil depth and a water reserve—groundwater, a drainage line, or a cool, mulched terrace toe. In a baked, shallow, wind-struck spot with no moisture below, this is the wrong tree no matter how native the name sounds.
