Trailing rosemary has become one of those “third time lucky” plants on our Quinta. After two completely failed propagation attempts, even while trying to root cuttings in pots, we finally received several rooted cuttings from a friend’s mature prostrate rosemary plant on February 15, 2026. Some were planted into pots, while others were tucked directly into harsher locations across the land where we imagined rosemary eventually spilling naturally over granite stones, terrace edges, and dry slopes.
So far, two cuttings appear to have survived. One is growing in a pot beneath Mimosa trees, while another remains alive on our hugelbed built from the French drainage excavation soil, partially hidden beneath weeds and pigface ice plant. It is not exactly a glamorous survival story yet, but honestly, Mediterranean homesteading often starts with stubborn little victories like a few green rosemary leaves refusing to give up.
Step-by-Step Growing Guide
1. Choose the Right Site
Trailing rosemary performs best in full sun with excellent airflow. Stone walls, terrace edges, raised beds, rock gardens, and dry slopes are ideal locations where stems can naturally cascade downward.
2. Prepare the Soil
Avoid rich or compacted soils that stay wet during winter. Mix gravel, coarse sand, or crushed stone into heavier soils to improve drainage and reduce the risk of root rot.
