Salvia nemorosa 'Blauhügel' (Woodland Sage)

'Blauhügel' is the compact woodland sage with a true-blue spike instead of the usual purple “blue.” Growing Salvia nemorosa 'Blauhügel' in Zone 8a is a sun-and-drainage job: Central Portugal will not freeze this plant out, but wet winter clay and Mimosa shade will flatten the bloom. On this homestead it starts as one nursery pot under the Albizia canopy and moves into open ground once the first October rains soften the soil.

Pyracantha angustifolia (Orange Firethorn)

Growing Orange Firethorn in Zone 8a has turned out to be an excellent low-input experiment in our Mediterranean food forest. Pyracantha angustifolia combines evergreen structure, spring flowers, bright orange autumn and winter fruits, wildlife value, and impressive drought resilience—but those sharp spines make sure you never forget which shrub you are dealing with. Botanically, the orange “berries” are actually small pomes, relatives of miniature apples.

Puncturevine is a low-growing, heat-tolerant annual best known for its hard fruits armed with painfully sharp spines. Growing Puncturevine in Zone 8a requires no help from us: Tribulus terrestris readily occupies dry, sunny and disturbed ground, but its ability to hide below mower height makes it one of the least desirable wild plants on our Mediterranean homestead.
